Too busy to blog...

Fuck, can I please just RELAX already? This past month has been so busy, I've had ZERO time to blog about any of it. And it's all really exciting stuff, too!

Bootie LA

Bootie LA at the end of July was fantastic ... it totally went OFF! WOW. Thank you, Los Angeles, for showing us Bootie kids from up north a good time! We were elated so many came out to support, throw down, put those hands up in the air, steal posters off the wall, whoop and cheer, go nuts for the free CDs, and basically just have an ass-kickingly good time!

Anyway, all the hard work paid off in the end, and LA really GOT it. We weren't sure how an all-mashup club would go over down there, but obviously, it WORKED. We'll be down there again on Friday, September 30th for another go-round. If it goes off a second time, there's a very good chance we'll make Bootie LA a monthly. Woo-hoo!

Bootie 2-Year Anniversary Party

As for our other baby, Bootie SF celebrated its 2-Year Anniversary a couple weeks ago ... and it was the ... BEST ... BOOTIE ... EVER.

Not kidding.

It was REALLY insane. There was a line around the block. D and I were really worried that a lot of people wouldn't be able to get in. By 11 PM, the club was at capacity, and they stopped letting people in. Some people had to wait in line for 45 minutes, which sucks. Ultimately, there were around 550 people who got through the door, and it was packed and sweaty and hella fun all night. But next year ... BIGGER venue! (And Rickshaw Stop was already bigger than our usual home at Cherry Bar).

But fuck, not only did the crowd turn it out, but so did everyone, across the board. Dada and I got the night rolling for the first hour, but DJ Jay-R KICKED ASS. He went on at 10 PM, I went backstage for five minutes, came back, and the floor was FULL. D-A-M-N. Thank you, Jay-R, for bringing it!

Then it was wham-bam-bam, three AMAZING sets in a row: Jay-R, Tripp, and Earworm, each set 30 minutes, each one the best set I've heard from each of them. Talk about bringing your A-game. The crowd was LOVING it. It made me so proud to witness this all-star line-up.

Smash-Up Derby hit the stage at 11:30, after some high drama involving Trixxie, who decided to completely FLAKE two hours before the gig. I immediately got on my mobile and called up Marcy Meow and Foxy, who I quickly recruited as my back-up singers and dancers to fill the void. It was a little rough going, teaching them vocal parts right before our set, but we persevered in the face of adversity, had a GREAT set, even including our new-and-improved rendition of Jimmi Jammes' "Sgt. Pepper's Paradise" as a set closer.

Then Party Ben and Mysterious D took over the decks for the rest of the night, with lots of the "Bootie greatest hits" and "spontaneous" performances happening on stage throughout the night ... Patty O'Furniture and Glamamore performed as Janet Jackson and Bono on Party Ben's "Sunday Bloody Control," Anna Conda did our A+D Missy Elliott/Le Tigre mash "Decepta-Freak-On," and Princess Kennedy made milkshakes on stage while lip-syncing Madonna vs. Kelis "Holiday Milkshake."

Everything flowed so smoothly during the night, and the floor NEVER let up, even during the performances. DAMN, people just wanted to dance! We had trouble kicking everyone out at the end!

The whole evening made me so excited for our Bay Area bootleg scene ... there's such an excitement for what's going on right now ... lots of BUZZ. The best part is that it's such a friendly, open scene. Everyone who came got a free CD. We gave away tons of stickers. People bought our new Bootie T-shirts and underwear! Everyone seemed to play nice, and it was such a great mix of people ... boys, girls, straight, gay, whatever ... everyone just having fun, which is what we like (can't stand pretentious "see and be scene" nightlife crowds).

Me, D, and Ben are beside ourselves with love, respect, and joy for San Francisco's bootleg community, and the especially for all the punters for embracing this crazy mash-up thing so much. And it's so great to meet in real time so many great bootleggers. DJ John was in the house, snapping TONS of pix (which I'm sure he'll post soon). Frienemy came all the way up from Southern California to party with us! I met Zax, creator of our favorite "Hollaback" mash-up ("Hollaback Cameo") and Kid Kameleon (remixer and DJ extraordinairre).

Our friend Jason hosted the after-party, and I think we showed Frienemy a good time? I hope so! Still can't get over what a great night it was!

Piss Clear production week

Immediately after the Bootie 2-Year, I had to start working on pre-production for this year's Piss Clear, the alternative newspaper I publish out at Burning Man every year. Yup, it's that time of year again. I spent an entire week in Piss Clear hell, and even pulled an all-nighter to get everything done.

I LOVE Adderall!

So yes, we're getting ready to go to Burning Man, which, believe it or not, I'm not exactly all fired up for this year. You see, unlike many Burners, it’s not like I need to go out to Black Rock City just so I can “be the real me” or some shit like that. I’m already doing that in my Real Life – throwing a nightclub, DJing, hosting parties, singing in a band – not to mention my part-time job working at a San Francisco gay newspaper. The last thing I should want to do is go out to some makeshift city in the god-forsaken Black Rock Desert just to … work at another newspaper? What am I, fucking crazy?

Apparently.

This is now Year 13 for me. And I think this might be my Burnout Year. I am just not feeling it the way I used to. Usually, editing Piss Clear gets me all jazzed up for going to the playa – but not this year. In fact, there's so much going on in my life right now, that I'm almost kinda dreading it. Like, I'm so crazy busy, that what I need is actually a REAL vacation ... not a WORKING vacation, which is what Burning Man is – at least when you publish a newspaper out there.

But as much as I needed a break from playa publishing, I unfortunately suffer from a nasty streak of responsibility. Ever since I found out last spring that the BMorg-operated Black Rock Gazette was out of business, I found myself stuck with an even greater sense of obligation to the community. I suppose I had to keep publishing my stupid newspaper. Besides, I always need to have a project. If I didn’t, then I’d have no reason to even GO to the playa.
And believe it or not, despite everything I’ve just written, I really do like Burning Man. Really.

I'm hoping that once I'm out there, and I'm sitting underneath our shade structure, with a cocktail in my hand, hanging out with my oft-neglected friends, I'll feel a lot better about it all. We'll see...

So ... I'm sure my next blog entry will probably be all about Burning Man. Hope I'm not too burned out to not blog for another month!
